HUNGARY

Hungarian higher education has represented academic excellence for over 650 years. The first university was established in 1367 in Pécs, a region in southern Hungary.

Today, Hungary is home to 65 higher education institutions, ranging from small applied sciences universities to top research universities. Among these institutions, 28 are state-funded, 11 are privately funded, and 26 are funded by the church.

As a result of the internationalization process of universities, students can easily find the program that suits their interests best. Universities offer more than 500 courses in English, German, French, and other languages. Foreign language programs are of high standard, and tuition fees are quite affordable compared to other European countries.

There is a wide range of study fields for students to choose from, including:

  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Law
  • Economics
  • Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Arts, Art and Humanities, Art Education
  • Engineering
  • Social Sciences
  • Teacher Training Education
  • Sports Sciences
  • Natural Sciences

While larger universities offer courses in all fields, smaller universities may have programs only in a few specific areas. Through joint degree programs, students can earn dual degrees in many universities in collaboration with higher education institutions in other European countries. Students applying to these programs enroll in both universities and receive diplomas from both institutions, thus obtaining a dual degree.

Higher education studies are offered in two different types: egyetem (university) and főiskola (college), both of which can provide education at all degree levels, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral education.

Although the degree structure is divided in most courses, there are some integrated (single-cycle) programs where the bachelor's and master's levels are combined. Some examples include veterinary medicine, architecture, dentistry, pharmacy, law, and medicine. These single-cycle programs consist of 10-12 semesters (5-6 years) and require completing 300 to 360 credits at the end of the education.
