Energy Efficiency

The President of the Chamber of Commerce has stated that the government needs to start taking pragmatic measures now to provide the necessary time and regulatory space to address the negative consequences of the war. Due to rising energy prices, living and working conditions in our country are seriously threatened.

According to the Chamber of Commerce, in such crisis situations, the government should try to negotiate temporary exemptions when signing contracts for future electricity and gas supply.

The Chamber of Commerce also recommends that the government enter into bilateral agreements with Germany, Italy, and Austria, as well as the United States, for gas supplies to the Czech Republic, including liquefied gas. Entrepreneurs believe that the government should also consider whether to take ownership of LNG terminals under development in Poland and Germany.

In addition, in light of Russia's aggression towards Ukraine, the Chamber of Commerce calls on the government to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the REPowerEU directive and the Temporary Crisis Framework for State Aid Measures to alleviate dramatically increased electricity and gas prices. These documents already allow for a wide range of measures to be taken by member states to ease high prices.

Furthermore, to ensure the availability of energy resources, the government should make it easier and faster for all property owners, including households, to change the authority for heating the property, for example, through simple notification.

The government needs to expedite the support notification process to ensure that a reasonable price decision can be made for the co-firing of biomass and various energy sources and to ensure that green incentives are paid for heat and electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The Chamber of Commerce suggests that plans in the Supported Energy Sources Act be implemented.

As a condition for ensuring energy supply, the possibility of extending the operation of coal-fired heating plants that do not meet emission limits for the necessary period should also be considered.

In the gas industry, the Chamber of Commerce believes that ensuring strategic gas reserves is the most important thing for the government to do. Therefore, the government should find a financial mechanism to fill the gas reserves in the Czech Republic. According to the Chamber, the state should also consider the development of shale gas extraction through hydraulic fracturing. Mining in Czech natural gas fields could lead to a decrease in gas prices, become an additional gas source, and strengthen the country's energy self-sufficiency.
